Look into the future! Have fun! I have already looked into the future and, without actually reading this book, I can bet anyone this book is just terrible! Let me give you a little idea as to what a typical page in this "book" consists of: HELLO. That's one entire page! Wait, it gets better. Page 2: A. That's it! The book devotes 784 pages which consists of the alphabet, the number 0-9, the words, YES, NO, HELLO, and GOODBYE, all of which can be found on an actual Ouija board. The concept is simple, ask a question, flip through the pages and the "book" will give you your answer!
On a recent trip to a large (and famous bookstore, starts with a B & eNds with an E), the thick paperback book caught my eye for two reasons: one being that I am a fan of the paranormal and two being it's massive thickness. I opened the book and immediately was taken aback at the absurdness that someone in their "right" mind would have the audacity to publish such an atrocity and really is testimony to what these corporate big-wigs think of the intelligence (or lack thereof) the American people! It's insulting! So, I bought it. No, no, I'm kidding. I did, however, decided to peek my curiosity and try its supposed mystical powers and so I asked it a question. Will I find a new job in the upcoming new year? I flipped through the pages and the book responded with an answer. According to the book, the answer is HXC YES 76HY. Er ok, but what did I expect? Exactly what the "book" responded, gibberish!

Paranormal Activity, I Thank You!

Finally, something that is actually scary! No, I cannot thank Hollywood for this one as it is not a product of the "entertainment giant" but rather from an ingenious, yet simple, idea come to life by little known director Oren Peli.
The premise is simple, couple is tormented by ghosts, brave boyfriend Micah (Micah Sloat) buys a camcorder with hopes of catching some sort of paranormal activity on video while at the same time gaining some evidence that will help to prove that his girlfriend Katie (Katie Featherston) is not crazy after all and something is in fact happening when the lights go out at night as she seems to be the target of the strange happenings... whew! One would think that with such a simple concept that there should not be much to this movie. Wrong!
This movie has again revitalized hope in the horror/scary flick genre. The term "scary" movie has become a joke and has deemed itself worthy of air quoting the word when speaking of said movies. However, Paranormal Activity is indeed a scary movie (notice the lack of quotations). Prior to watching this movie, I warned my mother, who was hellbent on watching this movie after hearing me talk about it for such a long time as I anticipated its wide-release in theaters, about how scar this movie will be. She laughed it off and expected what I'm sure many people were expecting, your run-of-the-mill-typical Hollywood horror movie. That, it was not!
At the movie's conclusion, which my mother dared not to peek through her sweater as she drooped it over her face and completely missed the ending of the movie, she absolutely HATED this movie! No, not because it was such a terrible movie, but because it truly frightened her! She curses the movie and blamed it for her yet to be fulfilled, long sleepless night. This is truly a sign that the movie accomplished what it set out to do, scare the shit out of people!
There was a good balance of comedy and horror. The comedy aspect of the film seemed to serve as mini intermissions so that the audience can take a deep breath from the terrors that were happening at night. My problem with this was there might have been just a tad too much of comedy which came from Micah who, for the most part, reacted like any one of us would have (for the most part) although many of his antics, comments and reactions became both annoying and a little ridiculous. Still, Micah's character was very much so needed in the film or it would have been a bore. The comedy in the f ilm also seemed to relax the audience so much in the way that some people thought that pure silence was funny. Yes, beware the young teen audience present at your local movie theater as they might ruin the experience of the film. Some of these unruly teens laughed every time a cuss word was uttered! Oh the naivety of this generation, is it Y or are we on Z yet? It is because the annoyance of some of these audience members which left me to ponder the thought if the experience of this film would have been much better watching it at home with my wife and my surround sound and with the silence. Either way, the experience of the film itself was one to remember.
All in all, what made this movie really creepy was the psychological aspect of it ( this is where The Blair Witch Project comparisons come in). There is definitely a lot more to see in this film compared to TBWP, which I dare not spoil for anyone. The sound in this film is phenomenal when all the things that, literally, go bump in the night start making its presence known.
Get ready for talking about this movie after it is done as there were plenty of moments in the movie that leaves you saying, "Oh, shit!" and "Did you see that?" that you would want to recall many of these moments with friends to make sure that you did not miss anything as I doubt you will as you will scrutinize the screen from left to right, top to bottom every time a "Night" scene comes on, you'll see what I mean. I highly recommend this film and if you really want to get scared, go see this at night and get ready to sleep with the lights on. Being home in the quiet night will almost guarantee that you will hear little things and attribute them to an unknown presence lurking through y our home, but don't worry, it may just be the house settling in.... or, you can just keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.
